How long does it take to build a vinyl liner swimming pool?

swimming poolsMany people ask me this question when they are in the planning stages of building a swimming pool, and there seems to be some outrageous claims being made by some pool companies around here.

We heard of one company in particular promising to build it in 3 days. I guess it could be done if you had a huge team of workers, but realistically to build one right it is going to take a few weeks.

There are many stages to building a high quality vinyl liner swimming pool here in Greenville and Spartanburg South Carolina so I will share them here today.

Once a homeowner decides on purchasing a swimming pool then the fun begins.

1st Week -

  • We call PUPS to go out within 72 hours and mark the utilities in the yard.

  • Once we know when PUPS will mark the yard, we schedule the excavation of the pool. This may take a few days depending on what is on the books ahead of time.

  • The pool kit needs to be ordered and shipped in as most of our pools are all custom kits from Kafko out of Atlanta GA.

Pool excavation

Once we have the pool kit and the site is excavated then we can move forward and construct the pool panels. They then will need to be plumbed, leveled and then squared up

2nd week -

  • Pour the footer around the base of the pool steel, and let it set up.

  • Set the plumbing in, and pressure test it for 24 hours at 35 psi.

  • Backfill the pool carefully around the back edge of the steel wall, and around the plumbing system.

  • Let the pool sit for a few days and water the dirt around the pool that was backfilled.

  • Repack and add dirt as needed to stabilize and compact the soil to hold the weight load of the concrete deck.

  • The next step would be to form and pour the deck, which entails preping the level of the soil, building the forms to contain the concrete and then actually pouring and finishing the concrete deck.

3rd week -

  • Set the equipment (pump, filter and optional heater) to the plumbing and place on the pad.

  • Hook up all electrical to the optional light and pool equipment.

  • Put bottom mix in the floor of the pool and then drop in  the vinyl liner.

  • Fill pool with water and cut the liner in.

  • Once filled with water, the equipment can be started and the balancing and sanitizing chemicals added.

This is pretty accurate scenario however due to rainy days and wet soil being a variable, it may add a week or two to the typical 3 week pool construction.

Some options that can be added are, a fence and spray deck, which also can take time to add to the pool completion timeline.

This should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect on how long it takes to build an average vinyl liner swimming pool.
