Sand filters for swimming pools have been around for many years due their simplicity and relatively inexpensive cost. They work off the principle of spraying water over a bed a sand. The sand would trap the dirt in the sand and the clean water would return to the pool.

Once the sand was reaching fullcapacity of dirt, it would cause the pressure in the filter to rise. The filter would then need to be "backwashed". To backwash the filter one could turn the valve and let the pool water rinse the sand helping clean most of the dirt from the filter. This is easy but very wasteful of the  water and chemicals.
